How OT's help
Whether a client's difficulties in the home are the result of illness or the natural ageing process, some of the most common challenges we help address include:
- Moving up and down the stairs
- Getting into or out of bed
- Using the bath or toilet
- Preparing and transporting meals and drinks
- Avoiding falls
The aim of an occupational therapy assessment is to identify the areas of day-to-day life that are causing difficulty. This allows us make recommendations to reduce them and (if desired) arrange for any recommended changes to be made to restore the maximum degree of independence in the home.
Our approach
Our aim is to provide flexible, practical and cost-effective solutions to allow you to freely and safely move around your home. Our assessment may involve looking at:
- Your current and likely future levels of mobility
- Your home environment, including bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, stairs and exterior access
- Equipment that you currently or are likely to need in the future, such as frames, scooters or wheelchairs
- Your own, your family's or carer's specific wishes and goals
Common recommendations
Some practical solutions that we may recommend to help you move around your home include:
- Small aids to help in day-to-day activities, such as grab rails or dressing aids
- Larger pieces of equipment, such as beds, chairs or hoists
- Mobility or walking aids, including ramps, wheelchairs or frames
- Stair lifts or through-floor lifts
- Other adaptations to your home, especially kitchens, bathrooms and extensions
