Our Brand Ambassador Completes the Pig 2 Pig Challenge

by Ian Charlton

Alex, a quadruple amputee, proudly serves as The OT Practice's brand ambassador, a role that perfectly reflects his inspiring journey of resilience and determination. After a life-changing illness in 2013, Alex has made it his mission to reclaim his independence while empowering others facing similar challenges. His passion for assistive technology and rehabilitation closely mirrors The OT Practice's dedication to helping individuals enhance their quality of life through occupational therapy, making him a natural fit for the role. Alex uses his platform to raise awareness about the life-changing impact of assistive technology and how, given the right guidance, individuals can conquer even the most challenging obstacles.

The Pig 2 Pig Challenge: A Feat of Endurance and Purpose

During the summer, Alex undertook and successfully completed the ambitious Pig 2 Pig Challenge, a four-week endurance test that showcased his physical and mental fortitude. The challenge started with Alex rowing 350 miles from The Pig Hotel in Harlyn Bay, near Falmouth, to The Pig at Bridge Place, near Dover, using a specially adapted boat. After reaching his destination, Alex then cycled over 650 miles back to Harlyn Bay on a handcycle.

He became the first-ever quadruple amputee to row offshore across the South of England, proving that, with the right support, adaptions and technology, incredible feats are possible. Alex’s journey not only raised significant funds and awareness for his causes but also inspired countless people, showing that with the right team and technology, anything is achievable. During his journey, Alex stopped at businesses, schools, universities, and charities to raise awareness for the FLOAT Foundation, which focuses on providing assisted technology to individuals with limb differences. His goal was to highlight how these technologies can transform lives.

The Power of Adaptations and Assistive Technology in Alex's Journey

Alex’s success in the Pig 2 Pig Challenge was made possible through a combination of physical adaptations, assistive technology, and an unbreakable spirit. His specially adapted boat and customised handcycle were crucial in enabling him to undertake the gruelling physical demands of the challenge. These adaptations were more than just tools; they were extensions of his resilience, providing him with the means to achieve his goals despite his physical limitations. Assistive technology played a pivotal role in Alex’s journey. The OT Practice, through its commitment to enhancing independence, understands that the right adaptations can empower individuals to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. From prosthetics and adaptive cycling equipment to specialised rowing aids, these innovations allowed Alex to push the boundaries of what is possible for a quadruple amputee.

The technology did not just assist him physically; it also reinforced his mental strength, knowing he had the best tools available to support his ambitions. Alex’s journey underscores the profound impact that occupational therapy and assistive technology can have on people’s lives. These tools can restore independence, build confidence, and enable individuals to pursue their passions against all odds. The success of the Pig 2 Pig Challenge serves as a powerful reminder that, with the right support and equipment, barriers can be broken, and dreams can be realised.

Proudly Supporting Alex Lewis on His Pig 2 Pig Challenge

The OT Practice was thrilled to support Alex Lewis during his incredible Pig 2 Pig Challenge, witnessing first-hand the dedication and determination that Alex and his team brought to this ambitious journey. A few words from Nikki, Executive Director of The OT Practice, “Giles and I were delighted to be able to support Alex and his team in person on day 4 of the Pig 2 Pig Challenge. We were fortunate enough to catch an early sight of the boat out at sea, crossing the headland of the Kingsbridge Estuary in Salcombe, which was truly inspiring. We then had the pleasure of welcoming in the team as they arrived at Dartmouth harbour after an epic stint of 31-miles of rowing over a 9-hour double leg. Sharing a well-earned (by them not us!) beer with Alex and his co-rowers Neil and Graham was a great way to end what a truly inspiring day.”
